ABOUT US

Arizona is ground-zero in the United States in the highly polarized and politicized battle over illegal immigration.

A focal point for that battle is the construction of more than 700 miles of fencing, including a segment of “virtual fence,” consisting of high-tech, infrared sensors that hasn’t worked as planned.

The Tucson sector of the U.S. Border Patrol is the busiest in the country, a place where immigration policy decisions have led more people trying to cross into this country to die in the desert.

Anti-illegal immigration group which have drawn national media attention such as the Minutemen, patrol the border. Some call them patriots, some call them vigilantes. Native American groups are caught in a cultural and political divide.

Businesses on both sides of the border are suffering in the global recession, with multi-national manufacturing plants in Mexico sending jobs to China to cut costs. U.S. merchants are seeing border business drop and tough new employer sanction laws combined with a slowing construction industry prompting immigrant workers to leave the state.

There is no consensus on the immigration issues in Arizona but lots of compelling stories as the chronicled by students at Arizona State University’s Cronkite School of Journalism in this in-depth report.
