Roland Fernandez was diagnosed with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease, in June. His symptoms began with numb, swollen fingers and slurred speech. Gradually his condition worsened and he lost independence. His right arm started cramping and he started losing his balance, which caused him to fall.
